Niezwykła historia zatopionego okrętu ożyła na nowo. Odnaleziono banderę ORP „Admirał Sierpinek”, którą jeden z marynarzy ukrył w dramatycznych dniach września 1939 roku. To unikalna pamiątka po legendarnej Flotylli Pińskiej i jej bohaterach.
Do Instytutu Strat Wojennych, w którego zakresie działalności jest m.in. badanie strat wojennych poniesionych przez Rzeczpospolitą na wschodzie w każdym, nawet najmniejszym ich aspekcie, zgłosił się, obserwujący od pewnego czasu naszą działalność, Pan Tomasz Strug. Pan Tomasz, syn mata okrętowego Józefa Struga, który służył na okręcie sztabowym Flotylli Pińskiej, ORP „Admirał Sierpinek”, udostępnił nam banderę, którą jego ojciec zdjął z masztu jednostki tuż przed jej samozatopieniem, opowiadając przy okazji związaną z tym wydarzeniem niezwykłą historię – mówi dr Bartosz Gondek, dyrektor Instytutu Strat Wojennych im. Jana Karskiego. – Mat, z ukrytą przez siebie banderą, przeszedł cały szlak bojowy marynarzy Flotylli Pińskiej, aby na koniec, u boku gen. Kleeberga, wziąć udział w bitwie pod Kockiem. Ojciec Pana Tomasza ukrywał bezcenny artefakt przez całą II wojnę światową, a po latach przekazał banderę swojemu synowi.

Jak przyznaje Pan Tomasz: – To dla mnie więcej niż pamiątka – to most łączący pamięć o jego ojcu z historią naszej ojczyzny.
Urodzony w 1913 r. Józef Strug pełnił służbę we Flotylli Pińskiej przez 8 lat, do września 1939 roku.
Lech Parell, Szef Urzędu do Spraw Kombatantów i Osób Represjonowanych, podkreśla: – Ta bandera to nie tylko artefakt, to symbol żywej pamięci o determinacji i poświęceniu polskich obrońców wschodnich granic.
Jakub Stefaniak, Zastępca Szefa Kancelarii Prezesa Rady Ministrów: – Ta sprawa idealnie wpisuje się w działalność Instytutu Strat Wojennych, który pełni rolę swoistego kustosza pamięci naszej historii. Opowieść o Flotylli Pińskiej i jej bohaterach powinna być przekazywana kolejnym pokoleniom Polaków. Łatwiej jest to robić mając do pomocy autentyczne przedmioty z tamtych lat. W przypadku flotylli każdy taki ocalały przedmiot jest na wagę złota.
Według prof. Grzegorza Motyki, dyrektora Wojskowego Biura Historycznego: – Flotylla Pińska, mimo swego wyjątkowego wkładu w obronę granic, pozostawiła niewiele materialnych świadectw. Bandera wypełnia tę lukę.

Flotylla Pińska, utworzona w 1919 roku, operowała na Prypeci, Pinie i Strumieniu – obszarze zwanym Morzem Pińskim – i odgrywała kluczową rolę w kształtowaniu obrony wschodnich granic II RP. Flotylla ta była dobrze zorganizowaną i wyszkoloną formacją, a jej głównym zadaniem było zapewnienie bezpieczeństwa na rzekach i terenach zalewowych, a także wsparcie działań lądowych wojska. Liczyła w szczytowym okresie 900 osób: marynarzy, oficerów i obsługę zaplecza.
Centralnym elementem formacji był ORP „Admirał Sierpinek”. Trafił do służby w polskiej marynarce w roku 1920 i kierował działaniami flotylli do chwili, gdy wobec otaczających sił wrogów i niskiego poziomu wód, jednostka musiała zostać zatopiona, aby zapobiec jej zdobyciu przez nieprzyjaciela.
